New Age Technology is a blanket term for a number of specific, pervasive, disruptive technologies that have big implications on the modern world and the not so distant future. And I’ll prove it! They include:
Artificial Intelligence 👩💻
Robotics 🤖
The Internet of Things (IOT) 📶
Blockchain🔗
Virtual, Augmented, and Mixed Reality 🕶
3D Printing 🖨
Quantum Computing ⚛
The Brain Computer Interface (BCI) 🧠
Synthetic Biology 🧬
Advanced Materials 💎
Nearly all of these technologies have something in common; they’re exponential technologies. In other words, they’re technologies that double in power while dropping in price on a regular basis.
As a result, they’re accelerating our world!
Enter Moore’s Law
While you’ve probably heard of Moore’s law before… here’s a quick recap.
In 1965, Intel founder Gordon Moore noticed that the number of transistors on an integrated circuit had been doubling every eighteen months. What this meant was that every year and half computers were getting twice as powerful at the same cost.
A common example of this is how the same computing power that put astronauts on the moon in 1969 now sits in our pocket at a fraction of the cost!
The real insight however was pointed out in the 1990’s.
Ray Kurzweil, the director of engineering at Google, discovered that once a technology is digitized, once it’s programmable, it hops on the back of Moore’s law and receives accelerating returns in the same way.
A great example of this is Boston Dynamics. Based in Boston Massachusetts, the cutting edge robotics company took their flagship robot Atlas from a (still impressive) clumsy strolling bipedal, to a sophisticated, dancing, leaping, backflipping humanoid in a single decade!
Who is Peter Diamandis?
When it comes to exponential technologies there are few people in the world more informed than Dr. Peter H. Diamandis, earning degrees in molecular genetics and aerospace engineering from MIT and a Harvard-trained medical doctor who co-founded, XPRIZE, BOLD Capital Partners, and more than two-dozen companies operating at the leading edge of technology & longevity.
He also runs Abundance 360 (A360), a tightly-curated, by-application-only community of 360 technology executives where he teaches exponential entrepreneurship and invites the most outstanding leading technology executives to share the latest advances in the fields of AI, computing, energy, transportation, retail, gaming, healthcare, and longevity.
Why does Diamandis spend so much time with those in his community? Diamandis is here to inspire, guide and transform the way these executives think in order to get the motivation and energy to create their massively transformative purpose in life and become “moonshot” thinkers.
Inspiration
Much of my passion for new age technology is inspired in large part by the work of Peter Diamandis, and from his most recent book The Future is Faster Than You Think.
If you’re looking for your next read, I can’t recommend it enough.
I like Peter because he’s been pretty consistent in his life in the ideals that he preaches and the way he seems to spend his time and money. He’s a great role model and someone I look up to. I think the world could use a lot more of them right now.
After you follow Peter long enough you’ll find there are a few key ideals that he preaches. Here are some notable ones…
Equity - Modern technology is making it possible for the global community to move closer and closer to, not necessarily equal outcome, but equal opportunity. A world of possibility for anyone, anywhere.
Positivity - There are a lot of problems in the world right now. And as a result, there is tremendous opportunity to help make the world a better place.
Abundance - Technology is helping make what once was scarce into an abundant resource. And this one is so critical because it hits on a very important concept.
When we work together, we are no longer fighting over a fraction of a pie, rather we are creating more pies for even greater abundance.
Takeaway
The key takeaway from Peter’s book is this:
“Waves of exponentially accelerating technology are beginning to converge with other independent waves of exponentially accelerating technology.”
As we “stand on the shoulders of giants”, we leverage the collective knowledge of all humanity up to this point. In the same way, technology builds on technology.
